We are pleased to be in a position to finally offer what we believe to be a very high quality Office Back Chair within our ergonomic seating range. Following the launch of our new B2B corporate website http://www.officeposturechairs,co,uk/ this year, we asked our manufacturer to exclusively design and build a high quality back chair for a competitive price that we could list on the new website. We jointly decided to offer a purpose built back chair incorporating inflatable lumbar & a seat slide, so that the chair would suit a broad range of users within an average height/weight range.

The back chair was actually launched a couple of weeks ago and we immediately had an order for 27 from a company looking to upgrade their office seating within a tight budget. This was quickly followed by further sales which clearly demonstrated the manufacturer had designed an excellent product. Having listed the chair on the B2B website we could see no reason why we should not discount its full retail price to below £200.00 and offer as few options as possible. Essentially the pricing model we have adopted means we are giving away the inflatable lumbar support, the seat slide and an upgrade from standard height adjustable arms to ones with forward/backward sliding armpads.

Recent studies now show that users of "Tablets" should avoid wherever possible using them on their laps which can cause painful hunching of the neck. Replacing the old faithful DeskTop may have many advantages but it certainly has some more serious disadvantages when it comes to posture issues.

The issues are all too similar to those highlighted in our recent Text Neck blog and recent studies by the Harvard School of Public Health clearly demonstrate this fact. We are often called to offices to carry out seating and/or desking assessments, but when it comes to muscoskeletal disorders, especially of the upper limbs, the source may not be in the office, but actually at home using SmartPhones or Tablets.

Given that very rarely are children taught how to sit correctly there is probably little hope that manufacturers will issue a posture guidlines to use the products safely.

A new standard (BS EN 527-1 2011 has been issued to address the desking and table standards previously covered within BS EN 527 Part 1:2000.

A European office furniture standards committee found that over the past 30-40 years people have been growing taller but the industry standard for desk dimensions has not accommodated this change. Being 180cm (6') tall might have been rare in the 1970s but now you have to be 190-200cm (6' 4") to be noticed ! Taller users struggle with their legs hitting the underside of the desktop, knees knocking into structural beams and the inability to stretch their legs without hitting an obstruction or modesty panel. Low desk also are a major contributor to upper limb disorders caused by a negative posture.

DSE - Posture Seating Assessments

Many companies offer DSE assessments and they are generally carried out by suitably qualified and experienced professionals. Following a visit to your work location they will submit a report often recommending enhancements to your workstation environment. These may include: A new chair, a footstool, document holder, ergonomic mouse and keyboard and perhaps a higher or lower desk. The difficulty for the client company is that often the assessor has no specialist knowledge of seating, and is left to purchase either the recommended brand chair or a chair that has the same functionality per the recommendation. Similar in a way to my comments about practitioners recommending kneelers - See the Kneelers blog.

This format does not really provide the solution as the assessor is no longer part of the process and the client company assumes that the recommended chair is the most appropriate, however it may be slightly too large or small, it was not installed by a professional company and no user training was given. Posture Seating - Kneelers - Kneeling Chairs

We sell kneelers because many practitioners recommend them for all the correct reasons. However, many of the cheaper wooden kneelers do not withstand the test of time very well, often breaking within 12 months. When it comes to kneeling chairs "cheap" is not always the best way to go.

Lets consider the Pro's and Con's of Kneelers.

Positives -
A posture positive position is attained (Knees lower than hips)
Generally significantly cheaper than a mid-priced ergonomic chair.
To some degree fashionable

Negatives -
Uncomfortable sitting position for long periods.
Continually held in an aggressive seating position without any back support.
Must not be used by anyone with a knee condition or prone to joint discomfort.

Most seating places us in a position whereby the knees are at the same
height as our hips, this effectively traps our upper body weight in the lumbar area and this weight compression can cause or aggravate many MSD's. By using a kneeler this body weight is decompressed and travels down to your knees. So effectively you create the environment to transfer you back problem to your knees !

Many practitioners are simply not aware that todays modern Orthopaedic Seating provides a forward tilt mechanism that forward slopes the seat down, thus allowing the weight transfer down through your legs without stopping it either in the lumbar area or knees. PLUS you have all the benefits of an office chair vs a kneeler. A good test of this is to purchase a foam seat wedge and place it on your existing chair !

Why is that so many companies will provide an employee with a reasonable salary package (Hopefully anyway!), a good PC and Desk, but yet when it comes to a chair it would appear the cheapest possible is often selected. Which nowadays means its come straight off the last container ship from Asia.!

The quality and functionality can often leave a lot to be desired and yet we often hear from clients that good chairs are just so expensive. Actually the "cheap" chairs are cheap because the components are "cheap". Is a decent chair expensive? " Not compared to your salary, your PC and even your desk". The prevention of muscoskeletal disorders and work absence is surely worth a little more than a cheap chair !
